Iranian star Googoosh has auctioned off a number of gowns she wore on stage throughout her career.

The singer, 70, known as the “daughter of Iran”, has a career spanning more than five decades, during which she has performed across the world, from Paris to Las Vegas.

Through auction house Bonhams, Googoosh listed a collection of couture, custom and designer items and accessories, many of which she wore on stage, in music videos or during television appearances.

Among the gowns to sell at the auction, which ended on March 3, was a full-length, long-sleeved forest green gown by dressmaker Shantaria, which raised $2,805. The star wore the dress for a performance in Las Vegas.

A Pamella Roland-designed gown, featuring flute sleeves and all-over sequins, as well as a built-in microphone loop, sold for $2,167. The dress was made for a 2018 performance at the Hollywood Bowl in California.

A custom gown, worn during her 2000 comeback tour in Toronto, Canada, was among the best-selling lots, fetching $7,650. Designed by Rahmanian, the smoky blue silk gown features full-length sleeves and an overlay of clear and grey sequins and beads in a floral design.

The lot’s product description reads: “After 21 years of not performing publicly, Googoosh entered the Air Canada Centre to thundering applause in an emotional and heartfelt return.”

“I am delighted to be partnering with Bonhams in this special sale of selected items from my wardrobe that have played a huge part in defining moments throughout my career,” the star said about the auction.

“This collection of costumes and couture are so meaningful to me, as fashion is a pivotal part of both my creative process and my life. I am so pleased to be able to share these pieces, each one a cherished memory, with my fans around the world.”

Born Faegheh Atashin, the singer and actress is one of Iran’s best-known stars. As well as being renowned for her music, film and television roles, she also heavily inspired fashion and beauty in 1970s Iran, so much so that a hairstyle was even coined after her, known as the “Googooshy”.

Googoosh will donate 25 per cent of the sale’s proceeds to the Iranian American Women Foundation.
